Tips for HVAC Care Ahead of Vacations

If you’re heading out of town for a week, or maybe even longer, there are some steps that you need to take to prepare your HVAC system ahead of time. After all, you don’t want to return home from a vacation away only to find out that your HVAC system is having problems.

Thermostat Settings

When you plan to be away from home for an extended period, you should adjust your thermostat settings up so that you are not paying to cool an empty home. Keep in mind that while setting the thermostat up a little is smart, you don’t want to turn your unit off completely.

You do still want some temperature control. Setting your thermostat up to 82° or so is good because your unit will still work to keep temperatures lower while not having to work as hard. If you turn your unit off completely, your home could get way too hot and way too humid.

High humidity levels in particular can damage your belongings and increase the likelihood of a mold infestation. Setting your thermostat a little higher is the perfect balance between maintaining a comfortable environment while also giving your air conditioner a break and lowering your energy costs temporarily.

Complete Maintenance Tasks

Before you go out of town, check to see if your air conditioner is due for a clean filter. If you recently changed out the filter, it’s probably fine. But if the filter looks particularly dirty or it is nearing time for a new filter, it’s a good idea to go ahead and change it out ahead of time. This helps to ensure your air conditioner has maximum airflow while you are gone.

It’s also a good idea to rinse out the condensate drain line with some vinegar before you leave. This can prevent dust buildup and mold growth from developing into a clog. The last thing you want to come home to is a water leak that has been sitting for days or maybe even weeks without you knowing about it. Even if you’ve already rinsed out your condensate drain line, go ahead and do it again just to be safe.

Secure Your Outdoor Unit

If you have a fence, make sure that your gate is locked so animals cannot push it open and get into your backyard. You may even consider investing in a breathable mesh cover for your outdoor unit. This easy solution can help prevent debris from getting inside the unit while you are away. It’s easy to place over the AC and remove when you’re back home again.
